#HauteMommyMoments

I had a full blown Haute Mommy Moment the other day.  The fam and I were invited to an event at the Soho House, something they refer to as Market where 20 or so members set up booths to promote their product lines.  Be it spicy pickles, overpriced-yet-chic throw pillows, leggings I live in called Karen Audra http://audrashop.com or environmentally friendly candles, they all squeezed into the swanky LA rooftop, booth to booth.  Several familiar faces peppered the scene...Josh Groban, Ricky Shroder, Robin Antin...all glam, all fab and then there's me.  Sweating and struggling to haul in an oversized City Select bumping into virtually everything and everyone - real glamourous.  At that moment, surveying a crowd of LA's finest, drinks in hand, smiles ear to ear, I said Fuck it...I'm joining in, baby or not.  My hubby bee-lined for the bar and minutes later presented me with the best gift a girl could ask for at 12pm on a Saturday...An overflowing beeline.  Drink up mama!  A few sips later, it was all better, not because I miraculously stopped bumping into everything, I just DIDN'T give a shit.  And then I DID a lot of shopping...My favorite booth there, the adorable baby/kids clothing line, Kira www.kirakids.com

The fabric is uber soft, apparently the ink is all-natural and good for babies and everything is manufactured right here in LA.  I ♥ the hell outta that!  Take the hippest eastsider you know and mash it with some iconic illustrations and you've got Kira.  I bought Gibson this little denim jacket with bat mobiles printed on the sleeves--  could you die?!  But I'm telling you I'd go back for the onesies and pants- both super cute gift ideas as well.  The price point isn't Carters but also isn't Marc Jacobs ($20-$75) soooooo....check out Kira, and send in some of your own #HauteMommyMoments xxx

Hauttie Of The Week: Hugs & Kegels

We’re kicking off a weekly post here at Haute Mom’s Life called Hauttie Of The Week (so original) celebrating inspiring Moms who offer something unique and special to our community. A chef, blogger, teacher, celebrity, yogi, someone who makes a difference as a leader, an innovator and a mother.

Today is special because it’s our first. I want to introduce you to mom of 3, Natalie Garay. Let me start by saying this - Natalie signs off every email the same way, “Hugs & Kegels, Natalie” I mean, how genius is that for a pilates instructor specializing in postpartum rehab!?

Moms around the globe love to practice pilates, but why? What is it about this form of fitness that has mamas transforming from Frump to Fabulous overnight?! Hollywood Mom Reese Witherspoon’s a fan, so is Megan Fox and now Natalie shares her secrets on how every one of us can transform our own post-baby bods into an A-list masterpiece.

  • What was your Aha moment that lead you to finding your niche in postpartum Pilates?

My aha moment came when I was working with a client one day and she shared a story about going to a trampoline park with her kids. She wanted to join in on the fun, but with her first jump she completely wet her pants! The story was vaguely familiar because another client shared a similar story with me sometime before. After that I realized, uh yeah, if you’re not rehabbing after childbirth, these things can happen!

Thankfully, I was introduced to Pilates while I was pregnant with my twin daughters. Had I not practiced Pilates after a two-month bed rest stint and a cesarean section surgery, who knows what my body would feel like. Pilates really was my saving grace, it helped me rebuild my strength and then some, plus prepped me for my second c-section surgery 19 months later.

After interviewing hundreds of moms I learned that only a handful were given suggestions about how to recover after delivery! As I connect more with Doulas, Midwives, and OBs, I hear over and over again, “Postpartum care is SO needed!”

*How is it different from other workouts?

Pilates differs from most workouts in that its focus is on form, breath, and it works the deep abdominal layers. Pilates doesn’t require heavy weight, or a lot of repetition, which surprises a lot of people that’s it so effective. Pilates works the slow twitch fibers of the muscles, which means that the work lengthens and strengthens the muscles for a long, lean body.

Pilates can be practiced on a Mat with certain props, or on Pilates equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, and Wunda chair.

  • What are some of the complaints you hear from moms during pregnancy and after giving birth?

During pregnancy women gain anywhere from 25-95lbs in a short amount of time; that puts a lot of stress on organs, joints, and muscles, so I hear women complain about an achy back, achy neck, knees, and of course a heavy pelvis, and stress incontinence.

After delivery, it’s a lot of the same complaints, but sometimes the pain and aches increase because now their body is weak, plus now their caring for their baby and the rest of their family, so there’s a lot of moving around, carrying the baby and no strength to help.

  • How does your teaching of Pilates help these ladies?

I help mamas reconnect to and strengthen their abdominals after surgery and childbirth. By strengthening their abdominals, moms are able to prevent and relieve low back pain, neck pain, improve posture, plus reduce chances of bladder prolapse and uterine prolapse.

Plus, while we’re doing all of this amazing rehabilitative work they’re also getting a great full body workout, which every mama wants so that they’re not having to lurch themselves on to the bed to get their favorite pre-pregnancy jeans on.

  • Is Pilates for everyone?  Anyone who should stay away from it?

Absolutely! Pilates is amazing, it can be tailored to meet any body’s needs. I’ve worked with clients ranging from the professional athlete to the post-operative hip replacement patient.

  • 3 helpful tips for moms looking to shed baby weight

I tell all of my clients that slow and steady wins the race. Just start moving your body, whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood after delivery, or by sprinkling in a Pilates video during baby’s naptime.

As long as you move your body on daily basis, whatever you can squeeze in, come a few months later, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

My 3 favorite go-tos:

*Stretch

*Hydrate

*Walk (or video)

  • You offer Pilates classes online.  That’s awesome.  Can you explain how that works?

It’s so much fun! Yes, I offer One-on-One sessions via webcam, online group Pilates classes, video courses, and downloadable videos.

  • Do I have to be tech-savvy to take these classes?  What do I need?

If you’re familiar with Skype or FaceTime you’ll be set!

For the live online sessions all you need is a laptop with a webcam, or an iPad, a Pilates/Yoga Mat, and a willingness to have some fun!

At times I will recommend certain props if I think the client can benefit from them, but they’re not required.

I have clients who own a Pilates Reformer and Cadillac that we’ll use during the session, but again, not required.

  • Do you train any celebs?  Or do you know of celebs who swear by this form of exercise?

Yes, when I lived in the Los Angeles area I did train a few celebrities. The gals I trained loved it because Pilates creates long, lean muscles for that dancer-like physique.

  • Anything else?

I usually recommend practicing Pilates a minimum of twice a week so that you and your body can become familiar with the fundamentals of Pilates, plus start to feel and notice a difference in your body more quickly.

I also warn my clients that Pilates is addicting. It just feels so good, and it’s really remarkable what you’re accomplishing without putting more wear and tear on your body.

Joseph Pilates has a famous quote: “After 10 sessions you’ll feel a difference, 20 sessions you’ll see a difference, after 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body.”

The Royal Bump

Touchdown in NYC for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!  The internet went nuts last night when pix were posted of Willy and Kate shaking hands with our own Royal duo, Bey and Jay at the Nets Game.  That moment, one for the books, but at the top of our minds here at Haute Moms Life, Kate's flawless fashion for her first trip to NYC.  The duchess NAILED IT!  3 looks, 24 hours, 1 Haute Mama!  A quick rundown: Five months pregnant with her second child, Kate showed off a small baby bump here under this maroon Seraphine coat by European designer Cecile Reinaud.  Check out the chic British maternity brand. http://www.seraphine.com/us/

Later, the royal couple left the Carlyle Hotel where they're staying for a private dinner in the Gramercy Park area — Kate was sensational in a black lace gown with see-through lace sleeves. http://www.beulahlondon.com/amara.html

Rounding out the night, Kate donned a glamorous grey coat by US designer Tory Burch with black denim...A Duchess in Denim?!  Our kind of gal. http://www.toryburch.com

How To Travel With Your Tots

Wouldn't it be nice to swiftly glide through airports the way Brangelina and brood do??!  If life was only that simple...and glamourous.  This holiday season we've got you covered so you can  focus more on spiked N-O-G and less on T-S-A.  Now, let’s get one thing straight, I like flying about as much as having my legs strapped down in those nasty stirrups as the Gyno dives head first for my crown jewels. Pap Smears are about as glamorous as commercial flights, only paps don’t crash, planes do…rarely, I know, but…ya get the pic. Now, take my fear of flying and compound that with a beloved 6-month-old glued to your boob for take off, landing and just about every other minute of a 5hour flight cross-country. Oh it happened ya’llz! I envy good fliers, like my sister-in-law, Linden. She’s NOT neurotic, and IS logical so it only makes sense that her little one popped out with pilot wings on too. Little beauty, Vivi, just 3-months-old, has had her passport stamped more than most. She’s been to the US twice—from the UK!!! Nashville, LA and the list is growing day by day.

Fortunately, Haute Mamas, Linden’s done the dirty work for us and has gathered a seriously informative list of Do’s and Dont’s for traveling con bebe. I followed her advice and let’s just say, my most recent trip from NYC to LA was very manageable. I did NOT break out in hives, I DID knock back 1 glass of wine, instead of the usual 3+++ and touchdown in LA also came with great compliments from the cabin that our baby was so well-behaved. I must say, I took great pleasure in seeing those initial death stares from old guy in 3B and lady with ginormous sparkler and too much plastic surgery in 5E, transform to smiles all around. Gibs was such a little charmer, they actually brought him up to the cockpit to see where all the magic happens…great photo opp.

Anywhooo…I owe our success to the lovely Linden. Here’s a list to help you get through this crazy season of travel. We’ve yet to write the manual on how to avoid family feuds upon arrival. That’s next. Stay tuned

  1. Book afternoon flight
  2. Feed extra throughout the day to make baby extra happy - and feed anytime you have an extra minute during traveling since you don't know when the next opportunity may be
  3. Feed on take off and landing
  4. Seat infant - use baby Bjorn not their weird infant seat belt the airline supplies
  5. If flying economy, sit in bulk head. It gives you a lot of room to move around and easy access to toilets. Also, for the longer flights, the bigger airplanes have bassinets for the baby coming down from the wall in front of bulk head. First come first serve.
  6. Make sure your expressed milk has the right caps on it, not just the teet. Otherwise it will leak everywhere...I know from experience, oops.
  7. Wear VERY breast accessible clothing
  8. Know how to quickly collapse your stroller - sounds obvious but there is a lot of pressure to get it collapsed quickly and correctly.  Buy stroller / car seat bags on Amazon to put your items in when gate checking, otherwise could get ruined.
  9. Bring toys with lights to occupy baby
  10. Travel light, no matter what you need the place you are going will have it
  11. Don't over think the trip, just go!
  12. Pick a hotel in the City Center so you can go back and forth to feed
  13. Lower your expectation of traveling quickly, the days of arriving to the airport with just enough time to breeze through security and arrive at the gate with 10 minutes to spare are over / give yourself plenty of time to casually get through
  14. Milton tablets are great for sterilization on-the-go
  15. Clip your car seat together while empty at gate check to make sure your newborn cushion and arm pads don't fall out
  16. Be prepared for things to get scratched and sometimes ruined when you check it (car seat and stroller) - to side step this either get a travel bag or buy a cheap stroller (citi mini) to travel with
  17. Be on the look out for any family restrooms as you walk through the airports, you will need them! And always ask for one, you would be surprised at the great facilities are hiding in airports and shopping centers. When in stores, hiding in a changing room works too!
  18. Score all the extra points you can with your adorable baby to get upgrades and skip lines.
  19. Pack everything in ziplock bags - sterile pacies, expressed breast milk, etc
  20. These are great for packing baby clothes in an organised way - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Packers-Tidy-Luggage-Packing-Cubes/dp/B000W8GMBQ

Haute Mommies Ruled The AMA's

It's thrilling to know that the most sensational, jaw-droppingly gorgeous dames to stroll the AMA red-carpet last night have 1 mayjah thing in common, they're all Haute Mommies! I was there, catching all the action firsthand as a correspondent for Dick Clark Productions and let me just say, there was no shortage of eye candy.  But more than anything, it was the Hollywood moms who really brought glam to the game.

Lemme break it down for you....our Top 3 picks for the best-dressed stars at the AMAs.

Jlo is stunning on camera, otherworldly in person. I stood beside her during rehearsals in broad daylight, she wore a crop top, low rise workout pants, bright pink Zanotti wedge-sneaks and the most killer set of abs I've ever witnessed. I mean, who still has a six-pack after twins!?? Her skin literally GLOWS.  Like if it was pitch black out, you'd still see Jlo because of her gorgeous glimmer.  Her ex beau, Beau (Casper) Smart was by her side reviewing "dance moves" while I gazed on, privately wiping a puddle of drool.  Hours later, JLo walked the carpet in the most stunning blush Reem Acra that rivals her iconic Versace gown from 2000.

Next up, Kate (The Most Beautiful Creature In The World) Beckinsale stepped up for an interview.  Lemme tell you, I could barely get my words out because I could barely get my eyes of her saint-like beauty.  This woman doesn't walk, she floats.  Her skin is flawless, body- omg omg omg! And her voice sounds EXACTLY like a Disney character, like Snow White or Belle or something.  Wanna feel really sick?  This Haute Mama is sweet as pie.  She wore a long white Kaufmanfranco with cutouts and looked every bit dynamite

Last but not to be F*%ed with, Fergie Fergalish Duhamel! I saw her perform in person and that bodacious booty, those killer gams, her itty-bitty waistline, there truly are no words.  She transfixes everyone the second she enters the room, and has more flavor all 31 put together.  She rocked the red-carpet in a black Halston Heritage, but there was not one thing basic about this ensemble.  Ferg's a mom to 16-month old baby Axl and has a seriously sexy hubby to boot.  All in all, Fergie is one Haute Mama.

A very special thanks to Hayley Paige for my ridiculously fun AMA gown!!!  You made this Haute Mama very happy :)
